Olenka pulled her knees up to her chest as she waited.

She glanced back down the rickety dock at the dilapidated temple. She was too far away to hear any voices, but she could see the lights flickering within as people shuffled back and forth in front of lanterns. What could they be doing in there? She crept a little closer to try and listen in, but when the dock started creaking, Olenka lost her nerve.

“She’ll be fine,” Olenka whispered to herself, retreating back to the shadows. “Mari’s smart. She knows what she’s doi–”

A loud bump came from inside the dilapidated temple. Olenka squeaked and tripped off the dock, landing with a painful splash in the shallows. Her heart was sputtering like a flap of loose sail as she scrambled under the pier. She clung to the barnacled post, holding her breath as she listened. The mangrove forest swelled with sound, but the temple door stayed still and shut.

Olenka sighed and massaged her eyes. She wanted to rub at the pain in her aching scalp, but it was still too raw. Mari had said the cold water would help, but it hadn’t. It just made her head sore and cold. But, even so, it was the best ineffective remedy she had.

The water here was very shallow, barely lapping at her waist. Olenka lay back into it, letting her legs slip into the sandy hollows between the rocks, draping her aching mane over a smooth, submerged stone behind her. She tried to close her eyes and relax as the chilled water seeped up her cheeks, but she just couldn’t. The moon was too bright, the forest was too loud, and an annoying piece of kelp was tickling her wrist. Olenka craned her neck up to glance down at the pestering leaf, trying to get a good look at it so she could slap it away, but she froze.
